WELCOME TO BRIGUS

The town of Brigus was established about the year 1612 when the Spracklin family is believed to have purchased “half the harbour of Brigus” from John Guy.  Brigus experienced steady growth from that period and was said to be a “considerable settlement” at the time of its burning by the French in 1697 and again in 1705.  By the mid 1800's the town was termed the “sealing capital of Newfoundland” - with the statistics of the year 1857 listing 87 vessels as having cleared from here carrying a total of 3500 men.

In political life Brigus has played an important role in the sending of men like Charles Cozens, Robert Brown, John Leamon, and Captains Bartlett, Norman and Rabbitts to the early Houses of Assembly in St. John’s.Brigus is very proud of their Arctic Heroes - the Bartletts and the Normans, and their daring rescues of other Arctic adventurers.  The whole world knows of the important part our Captain “Bob” Bartlett played in Peary’s discovery of the North Pole in 1909.

As you walk our streets today you will see many reminders of the town’s illustrious past - the dry stone walls; the Bartlett Monument at Chafe’s Beach on Middle ridge; the Steel Sails at Bishop’s Beach; Hawthorne (built in 1830); the Old Stone Barn (reconstructed on the same site it has stood on since the early 1800's); the Historic Tunnel (1860); Vindicator Park (site where the Brigus newspaper was published at the turn of the century); the United Church built in 1875; the former St. George’s Anglican Church, now a heritage site(1876); Mercy Convent (the oldest outside of St. John’s - 1860).

There are many more - but you just walk our town’s ancient streets and lanes and talk to our friendly towns people.  Experience life in a true English Village that will create memories to last a lifetime.  Our people are proud of their heritage and their town.  One only has to look at the pride that they have taken in preserving the homes and properties in our town.

We are located in the heart of Historic Brigus across from Wilcox Gardens.  Travel west from St. John’s or East from Argentia or Port aux Basques to exit 31 at Roaches Line overpass.  Take Route 70 to the junction of Route 60.  Turn right unto Route 60 and travel East for about 3 kilometres.

Once in Brigus, travel to the heart of the community, and take your time to view the many old and historic homes and sites in the town.  As you make your way through the town you can enter Water Street from either North or South Street.  We are located in the centre of the street across from the town hall.
